Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has been included in Whoscored’s Africa Cup of Nations team of the round.
Bassey has been one of the best players for Nigeria and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in general. The Fulham man has been a constant fixture in Jose Peseiro’s lineup.
Bassey was impressive for the Eagles in the 2-0 win against Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions.
The Fulham star provided the assist for the Eagles’ second goal scored by Ademola Lookman, who bagged a brace in the win.
The 24-year-old registered 71 touches, 38 passes, four tackles, one shot, and one interception. The game eventually ended 2-0 in Nigeria’s favour.

Following his heroics with the team, Bassey has been included in Whoscored’s team of the week.
Whoscored.com wrote:” Despite Ademola Lookman’s brace, the player of the match in Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Cameroon was Fulham centre-back Calvin Bassey, who made a total of four tackles, one interception, and four accurate long balls.
“The 24-year-old also won four aerial duels and provided the assist for his side’s second goal, in the 90th minute.”
However, Bassey is the only Nigerian in the squad, as Ademola Lookman, who scored a brace against Cameroon, was overlooked.
Calvin Bassey will hope to replicate the same performance when the Eagles take on the Palancas Negras of Angola in the quarter-finals on Friday.
