Italy are four-time world champions, with their last title coming about twenty years ago. Even though they won the delayed Euros in 2021, they have not played at the World Cup for seven years.
This is the third World Cup qualifying campaign in a row where Italy has ended up in the playoffs, after tough losses to Sweden and North Macedonia.
The last time these teams played was five years ago. That 0-0 draw at Windsor Park stopped Italy from qualifying directly for Qatar 2022 and set up the infamous ‘disastro’ against North Macedonia.
Northern Ireland worked hard for that draw in Belfast, but they have lost all seven of their previous games in Italy. The combined score is 16-2, and they have failed to score in six of those matches.
Northern Ireland’s young team is getting better, but the Azzurri have started scoring more goals under Gattuso. That attacking strength should help them in next week’s decider.
