Northern Ireland will travel to Italy on Thursday evening for their European playoff semi-final. The winner will move on to the final, while the loser will miss out on another World Cup.
Whoever wins this high-stakes match in Bergamo will face either Wales or Bosnia-Herzegovina next, with a spot in this year’s global finals at stake.
Italy are four-time world champions, with their last title coming about twenty years ago. Even though they won the delayed Euros in 2021, they have not played at the World Cup for seven years.
This is the third World Cup qualifying campaign in a row where Italy has ended up in the playoffs, after tough losses to Sweden and North Macedonia.
The last time these teams played was five years ago. That 0-0 draw at Windsor Park stopped Italy from qualifying directly for Qatar 2022 and set up the infamous ‘disastro’ against North Macedonia.
