Sporting Lisbon will try to earn their first win of the 2026-27 Primeira Liga season when they host Vitória de Guimarães at Estádio José Alvalade on Friday, kicking off matchday two.
Rui Borges’s team drew 2-2 at Estrela Amadora in their first match last weekend, while Tiago Margarido’s side lost 1-0 at home to Arouca.
Sporting won all four of their pre-season games and seemed ready to move past last season’s setbacks, so letting a two-goal lead slip at Estrela was especially frustrating.
The Lions were in control after Rodrigo Zalazar and Fotis Ioannidis gave them a two-goal lead, but Estrela came back late to earn a draw, leaving Sporting with just one point from their first game.
After finishing the 2025-26 season without a trophy, a win this weekend would help lift the Lions’ spirits. They can also take confidence from winning 13 of their 17 home league games last season (D2, L2).
Sporting have also dominated this fixture at Alvalade, winning 13 of their last 15 home games against Vitoria (D2), including the last nine in a row. Matches outside Lisbon, however, have been more balanced.
Given their strong home record in this matchup, Sporting are favourites and will be keen to claim all three points after last weekend’s setback.
