Dinamo Zagreb hope to move closer to the UEFA Champions League group stage when they host Kauno Zalgiris at Stadion Maksimir for the first leg of their third qualifying round on Tuesday evening.
The Croatian champions have already faced a tough challenge in Europe this season. Meanwhile, the Lithuanian title holders come to Zagreb aiming to keep their strong unbeaten run going under Zeljko Sopic.
Dinamo Zagreb started this season’s Champions League in the second qualifying round after winning the Croatian league for the 26th time. However, reaching the third round turned out to be much harder than they expected.
Mario Kovacevic’s team drew 1-1 away against Swiss side Thun, then quickly fell 2-0 behind in the first 22 minutes of the return leg in Zagreb.
But goals from Dion Drena Beljo and Lukas Kacavenda, scored just four minutes apart, pushed the match into extra time. Moris Valincic then secured Dinamo’s place with a dramatic winner in the 112th minute, sending them through 4-3 on aggregate.
In contrast, Kauno Zalgiris have already played through two qualifying rounds to get to this stage.
The Lithuanian champions narrowly beat Kosovo’s Drita 4-3 on aggregate, then defeated Klaksvik from the Faroe Islands 1-0 over two legs to earn this match against Dinamo.
Kauno Zalgiris have been tough to break down during qualifying, but we expect Dinamo Zagreb to use their home advantage and take a strong lead into the second leg.
