Chelsea slumped to a dismal 12th-place finish last season but the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino and the continued dealings in the transfer market have many Blues fans optimistic about the upcoming campaign, although that could start with defeat at the hands of Liverpool.
The hosts have looked decent in pre-season, racking up 13 goals in five games and winning three of them. However, they did draw against both Newcastle and Dortmund and it will take a while to erase the scars of last season.
Chelsea won just one of their final 12 league games, losing seven of them and now open the season against a Liverpool side that looked back to their best towards the end of last season.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were dismal in the first half of the campaign but ended on a high, going unbeaten in their final 11 league games and winning seven of them.
They scored 27 goals in that run but conceded 14 at the other end, and pre-season has done little to dispel concerns over their defensive frailties.
Four of their five summer outings have seen goals at both ends, with Liverpool scoring 18 goals but shipping 11, making both teams to score a standout choice on Sunday.
Given Liverpool’s end-of-season form and their goal-frenzied pre-season, I fancy them to take the points on Sunday in a high-scoring match.
They have scored at least three goals in all of their pre-season games but have conceded twice or more in three of them, so a high-scoring encounter looks likely.
Mohamed Salah looks well-placed to get among those goals, too. The Egyptian had a poor season by his own high standards last year but finished on a high, scoring eight goals in his final 12 appearances. Our prediction is Over 1.5 Goals.
