Como’s rapid rise has earned them a first Champions League match at the small Stadio Singaglia, where they will face RB Leipzig on Thursday evening.
Como have invested heavily to compete with Europe’s top teams. They are now following a path similar to Leipzig, who reached the semi-finals six years ago despite being outsiders.
This is Como’s first time in the Champions League and their first appearance in any UEFA competition, after they finished fourth in Serie A last season—a club record.
It’s a remarkable achievement for a team promoted to Serie A only two years ago and playing in Serie D as recently as 2019.
Since 2024, Como have spent more than any other Serie A club, building a squad full of attacking talent such as Nico Paz and top scorer Tasos Douvikas. They also kept a league-high 19 clean sheets last season.
Leipzig, who reached the semi-finals in 2020, have returned to the Champions League after missing out last season. They finished third, but that result led to a coaching change, with Martin Demichelis replacing Ole Werner.
Leipzig have more Champions League experience, but Como have become a well-organized team under Fabregas and could be tough opponents.

PSG have played in every season since 2012-13 and always reached the knockout rounds, while Slovan Bratislava are just happy to be in this year’s league phase.
Slovan Bratislava’s debut in 2024-25 did not go well. They finished second-to-last in the 36-team table after losing eight games in a row.
In the last 35 years, no European Cup or Champions League winner has lost their first home game of the next season, and that is likely to continue.
PSG have not been at their best this season, but Slovan have also suffered some surprising home losses and are not on the same level. We predict over 2.5 goals.
